Land ownership questions draw a big crowd in Kings County

A grassroots land-protection group is calling on the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission to investigate the ownership of land in the Kings County area of Prince Edward Island.

More than 200 people attended a public forum in Montague on Saturday, organized by the Coalition for the Protection of PEI Lands.

“This is a big issue within Three Rivers,” said Shane MacDonald, one of the speakers at the meeting. “A lot of people have been waking up to the actual mass of purchases of large corporations in the Three Rivers area or even just Eastern PEI”

The meeting focused mainly on land owned by two Buddhist monasteries in Kings County, as well as land owned by corporations or individuals that coalition organizers believe to be affiliated with the Buddhist movement on PEI

The coalition has concerns over what it sees as a concentration of land ownership, and the impact of rising land prices on the local community.

“Multiple properties being sold and resold to non-residents is giving us massive inflation,” MacDonald told CBC News on Monday. “There’s evidence to see that a lot was sold a year ago for $20,000 and then sold for $100,000 a year after that. That’s a

LETTER: Saanich ignores the encroaching properties of municipal land

Across Saanich, dozens, if not hundreds, of properties encroach upon municipal property and, despite current CAO Brent Reems’ assurances (report to council, April 2018), little is being done to prevent it. Thousands of square feet of public property, worth millions of dollars, upon which no taxes are being paid, have been illegally appropriated by homeowners for their sole use and enjoyment. People who know how to manipulate the system are obtaining permits for fences and hedges at the expense of the majority.

In 2020, the Saanich Engineering Department issued a boulevard permit, contrary to policy and for which there is no charge, for a fence. Granting the homeowners a strip of property worth roughly $16,000 and with the consent of the Bylaw Department. In just the last year I have appealed to the Bylaw Department to enforce infractions in clear violation of bylaws dealing with encroachments on roughly 2,000 square feet of municipal property, yet Brent Reems maintains the municipality’s policy of discretionary enforcement and nothing has happened.

While many of these encroachments endanger public health and safety by forcing pedestrians to walk on roadways [an illegal act in itself, MVA part 3, section 182(2)] the municipality regularly turns a

Does the Google Pixel 7a have wireless charging?

The Pixel 7a has landed, and it does quite a few things better than its predecessor. While it still has the 6.1-inch OLED display as last year’s Pixel 6a, the Pixel 7a bumps the refresh rate up to 90Hz from the original 60Hz. You also have the newer Google Tensor G2 chip inside, plus a huge jump to 64MP on the main camera compared to the 12.2MP camera on the Pixel 6a.

But what about wireless charging? The Pixel 6a did not have wireless charging capabilities, so did Google learn its lesson by adding that feature to its next budget-friendly phone?

Yes, the Google Pixel 7a has wireless charging

Almost all of the best smartphones these days have wireless charging, so it was a little surprising that the Pixel 6a did not — though it was likely due to its low price. However, Google fixed this with the Pixel 7a by including wireless charging this time (as well as bumping the price up to $499 instead of $449).

However, like all wireless charging, don’t expect it to be super fast — the Google Pixel 7a caps out at 7.5W wireless charging speeds.

It’s important to

Owing to the demand from councillors, the Greater Chennai Corporation plans to assess 20,000 buildings, developed on poromboke land, for property tax. It has sought a clarification from the government whether the assessment of such buildings can be carried out in various zones of the city.

At the Corporation Council meeting held on March 2, councillors demanded a property tax assessment of buildings on Poromboke land. Their argument was that many families that had been living for generations on certain categories of land, like grama nathamwere unable to get pattas.

ME Sekar, councillor of ward 89 in the Ambattur zone, said over 500 buildings in areas, like Kamarajar Nagar at Padi, had been built on poromboke land, and the residents were demanding pattas. “The residents have demanded that the Corporation assess the buildings for property tax,” he said.

The situation is more challenging in the added areas, which were merged with the city in 2011, Corporation officials say. “There are no specific guidelines for solving such issues,

Missouri football lands first commitment in 2024 recruiting class from in-state tight end

Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz jogs off the field before a game against Arkansas on Nov. 25, 2022, in Columbia, Mo.

Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz jogs off the field before a game against Arkansas on Nov. 25, 2022, in Columbia, Mo.

Missouri football landed its first commitment of the 2024 recruiting class on Saturday, and it came from in-state. Joplin tight end Whit Hafer announced his decision on social media.

“Thankful and blessed to announce my commitment to The University of Missouri,” Hafer said in a Tweet.

Hafer was rated as a three-star prospect at tight end by 247Sports. He chose the Tigers over offers from Kansas, Kansas State and UNLV.

He is listed in his Twitter bio as standing 6-foot-7 and weighing 235 pounds. 247Sports ranked him as the No. 32 tight end nationally in his class, and the No. 15 best prospects in the state of Missouri.

The 2024 class became Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz’s second in a row to have an in-state tight end as its first commitment. The class of 2023 started out with Brett Norfleet committing to the Tigers.

Residing in the Show Me State wasn’t Hafer’s only connection to the MU program. His father, Jeff Hafer, played four years of basketball for the Tigers from 1996-2000, when he bridged the head coaching tenures

China isn’t leader in land ownership in South Dakota, the USDA says

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — Gov. Kristi Noem is concerned, and at least several lawmakers are concerned, about foreign ownership of agricultural land.

The state already has a law that restricts foreign ownership of agricultural land by a person or government to 160 acres. But the proposal in 2023 appears to be more restrictive than state law 43-2A-2 passed in 1979.

The Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee voted 7-0 on Feb. 14 to send SB-185 forward to the full Senate. The bill calls for creating a board to review purchases or leases of agricultural land by foreign persons or entities, with the governor deciding whether to allow a transaction to proceed.

Noem is focused on Chinese-ownership of agricultural land.

“We also have a duty to protect South Dakota land from national security threats. Possibly the greatest external threat facing our nation today is the Chinese Communist Party. Unfortunately, foreign countries now hold approximately 40 million acres of ag land in the United States – and that number will only increase as evil governments like China step up their game,” Noem wrote in an opinion piece published on Feb. 2 on news.sd.gov.

Multiple media have reported about the Chinese Community

The Minnesota Vikings are expected sooner than later to meet one of the hottest defensive coaches going into the NFL right now.

Minnesota hit the ground running on hiring a new defensive coordinator in the days after they dumped Ed Donatell, but then things came to a screeching halt. As it turned out, the team brass pumped the brakes for one reason only — a shot to land Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, among the rising young stars in the league’s coaching ranks.

Over the weekend, the Vikings took two big steps closer to landing their guy. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday, February 4, that the Broncos had cut Evero loose and that an interview with his old compatriots — general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell — was imminent.
