Westwold property owner loses land, barn and bridge in rising river | iNFOnews

A property owner in Westwold is losing land and structures after the Salmon River crested on May 6, and is now under a local emergency order with the TNRD.

Strett Mercer, whose primary home is in Burnaby, spent a few harrowing days at the property in Westwold over the weekend as river waters eroded his land, took out a farm bridge and threatened to topple his barn. He said two large trees fell down and were backing up the even more flow, directing more water to the bank edge.

“It was scary, I’ve never seen a river run like that,” he said. “I was with the neighbor, wondering if I should pull everything out of the barn to save it, trying to figure out what to do.”

Mercer hesitated to take action, concerned about provincial regulations around working around rivers and elements of whether the costs of trying to stop the erosion himself would be covered by insurance. He set up a security camera and returned to

While it still has the 6.1-inch OLED display as last year’s Pixel 6a, the Pixel 7a bumps the refresh rate up to 90Hz from the original 60Hz. You also have the newer Google Tensor G2 chip inside, plus a huge jump to 64MP on the main camera compared to the 12.2MP camera on the Pixel 6a.

But what about wireless charging? The Pixel 6a did not have wireless charging capabilities, so did Google learn its lesson by adding that feature to its next budget-friendly phone?

Almost all of the best smartphones these days have wireless charging, so it was a little surprising that the Pixel 6a did not — though it was likely due to its low price. However, Google fixed this with the Pixel 7a by including wireless charging this time (as well as bumping the price up to $499 instead of $449).

However, like all wireless charging, don’t expect it to be super fast — the Google Pixel 7a caps out at 7.5W wireless charging speeds.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi Wednesday met Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus in a bid to boost cooperation between the two allies, state media reported.

Tehran has been a main backer of Assad’s government since an uprising turned into a full-blown war in March 2011 and has played an instrumental role in turning the tide in his favour.

Iran has sent scores of military advisers and thousands of Iran-backed fighters from around the Middle East to fight on Assad’s side. With the help of Russia and Iran, Syrian government forces have controlled large parts of the country in recent years.

In an interview with the pan-Arab television channel Al-Mayadeen, Raisi called for reconstruction efforts and for refugees who fled the country’s war to return to the country.

Raisi, who is a leading high-ranking political and economic delegation in a two-day visit to Syria, was received on arrival at Damascus International Airport Wednesday by Syrian Economy Minister Samer al-Khalil.

Ukraine arrests two land plots in Lviv Oblast belonging to Medvedchuk wife Oksana Marchenko

A court seized land plots with real estate that Marchenko owned illegally and obtained through a fraud, the SBU said. The property is worth up to UAH 17.5 million ($476,000), the security service’s message reads.

“The (land plots) are located in one of the best tourist spots in Lviv Oblast,” the SBU said.

“Medvedchuk’s wife started to illegally build a hotel complex there.”

The former head of the district land department was also convicted of criminal activity. He reported false information during 2004-2010 in order to issue state acts of land ownership in favor of Marchenko, the SBU said.

The official was served a notice of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Part 2 of Article 364 (abuse of power or position) and Part 2 of Article 366 (forgery). The case has been sent to court.

The SBU initiated the seizure of three land plots in Lviv Oblast illegally owned by Marchenko in August 2022. The investigation has been ongoing since then.

Beginner Michigan pilot Taylor Hash lands plane with missing wheel in emergency landing

A beginner pilot in Michigan safely landed a plane that was missing a crucial part Friday after another pilot coached her through the terrifying, caught-on-camera moment Friday.

On Taylor Hash’s third-ever solo flight, she lost the aircraft’s front nose gear tire as she cleared the runway and ascended into the air.

The missing piece was quickly noticed by another pilot who was preparing to take off, according to reports.

The veteran pilot alerted the control tower at Oakland County International Airport about the mishap, and then jumped into action to offer life-saving guidance to the freaked-out 21-year-old.

The more experienced pilot, Chris Yates, radioed Hash and quickly reassured her as he heard her voice tremble.

“Taylor, this is Chris. My daughter’s name is Taylor and I taught her to fly! We’re gonna be just fine, kiddo,” Yates said over the radio, according to WXYZ.

Taylor Hash was given a helpful hand from an experienced pilot after he was told that his landing gear was missing.

Greater Chennai Corporation to assess 20,000 buildings on poromboke land for property tax

Owing to the demand from councillors, the Greater Chennai Corporation plans to assess 20,000 buildings, developed on poromboke land, for property tax. It has sought a clarification from the government whether the assessment of such buildings can be carried out in various zones of the city.

At the Corporation Council meeting held on March 2, councillors demanded a property tax assessment of buildings on Poromboke land. Their argument was that many families that had been living for generations on certain categories of land, like grama nathamwere unable to get pattas.

ME Sekar, councillor of ward 89 in the Ambattur zone, said over 500 buildings in areas, like Kamarajar Nagar at Padi, had been built on poromboke land, and the residents were demanding pattas. “The residents have demanded that the Corporation assess the buildings for property tax,” he said.

US government officials are expected to make a decision on one of the biggest US oil projects in decades this week.

Environmental groups and some Native residents have long opposed the proposal because of its potential for climate impacts and wildlife damage.

But the opposition has grown rapidly in the last few weeks as the #stopwillow campaign has gone viral on TikTok.

ConocoPhillips, the company behind the project, said it would create thousands of jobs and revenue for locals.

The Willow oil project – if agreed – could produce up to 180,000 barrels of oil a day, making it the largest oil project in the region for decades. By comparison, Prudhoe Bay in Alaska, which is the largest oil field in North America, produces 281,800 barrels a day.

The US Bureau of Land Management estimated that the project, on Alaska’s remote North Slope, would produce up to 278 million metric tons of CO2e over its 30-year lifetime – the equivalent of adding more than 2 million cars to roads in the US.

Missouri football landed its first commitment of the 2024 recruiting class on Saturday, and it came from in-state. Joplin tight end Whit Hafer announced his decision on social media.

“Thankful and blessed to announce my commitment to The University of Missouri,” Hafer said in a Tweet.

Hafer was rated as a three-star prospect at tight end by 247Sports. He chose the Tigers over offers from Kansas, Kansas State and UNLV.

He is listed in his Twitter bio as standing 6-foot-7 and weighing 235 pounds. 247Sports ranked him as the No. 32 tight end nationally in his class, and the No. 15 best prospects in the state of Missouri.

Nearly 7,800 hectares of ranch lands, along with grazing licenses for 56,000 hectares of land, are being returned to Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation (SXFN) as part of treaty with the Northern Secwepemc te Qelmucw (NStQ).

“Our ancestors would be pleased with the acquisition of the BC Cattle Company,” Kukpi7 Hillary Adam, Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation. “Our Elders brought the land issue forward to governments many times over the years, but it always fell on deaf ears. Our resolve to acquire this land has never wavered, even after we learned the ranch sold earlier this year to a private purchaser. We never gave up hope that it would be ours someday and today with Stswecem’c Xget’tem as the new owners, we have something to celebrate.”

A Texas angler landed one heck of a largemouth bass this week while fishing at Lake Nacogdoches.

It was so massive that biologics borrowed the bass for use in a selective breeding program to benefit statewide fisheries.

But before anyone gets too excited, the bass caught by Jack York is not as big as it appears to be in an image shared Monday by the Toyota ShareLunker Program – Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Top comment: “Camera man… ‘HOLD IT AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN TO ME! THIS FISH LOOKS AS BIG AS A GROWN MAN! PERFECT!’ ”

Another observation: “I’m gonna need this photographer to take my fish pics! That is a giant but geeze in this pic it looks bigger than Jack. Good job!”

Ribbing aside, the bass weighed 13.51 pounds, certainly worthy of the Legacy Class ShareLunker designation.
