A property owner in Westwold is losing land and structures after the Salmon River crested on May 6, and is now under a local emergency order with the TNRD.

Strett Mercer, whose primary home is in Burnaby, spent a few harrowing days at the property in Westwold over the weekend as river waters eroded his land, took out a farm bridge and threatened to topple his barn. He said two large trees fell down and were backing up the even more flow, directing more water to the bank edge.

“It was scary, I’ve never seen a river run like that,” he said. “I was with the neighbor, wondering if I should pull everything out of the barn to save it, trying to figure out what to do.”

Mercer hesitated to take action, concerned about provincial regulations around working around rivers and elements of whether the costs of trying to stop the erosion himself would be covered by insurance. He set up a security camera and returned to

Queens Assemblyman Clyde Vanel crash lands plane on Long Island beach

Queens Assemblyman Clyde Vanel crashes and lands a small airplane he was piloting on a Long Island beach Friday afternoon in a scary scene that was captured on video.

Vanel told CBS 2 that he and a friend took off in his single-engine Beechcraft from Brookhaven Airport around 2 pm “to practice some maneuvers” in the nice weather.

Suddenly, however, a pleasant day in the skies turned to terror when the plane’s engine lost power.

“Of course I was panicked. I didn’t understand what was going on with the engine,” Vanel said.

But Vanel regained his composure and said that his emergency training kicked in.

“Airspeed, find the best place to land, communicate and then exit,” he said. “The best place for me to land was a small area that had a beach that wasn’t around people, that wasn’t around stuff.”

  • A passenger told The Washington Post that they were having dinner and food going flying.

A Lufthansa flight from Austin, Texas, to Frankfurt was forced to land near Washington DC on Wednesday evening after running into severe turbulence, the airline and authorities said.

At least seven people were injured and sent to hospital because of the turbulence, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority told Insider in a statement.

Flight 469 diverted to Dulles International Airport and landed at around 9:10 pm, the authority said.

In a statement to Insider, a Lufthansa spokesperson said the plane was hit by “brief severe turbulence” around 90 minutes after it took off from Austin.

“This was so-called clear air turbulence, which can occur without visible weather phenomena or advance warning,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said some passengers had sustained “minor injuries” and that flight attendants administered care onboard before the emergency landing.

Missouri football lands first commitment in 2024 recruiting class from in-state tight end

Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz jogs off the field before a game against Arkansas on Nov. 25, 2022, in Columbia, Mo.

Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz jogs off the field before a game against Arkansas on Nov. 25, 2022, in Columbia, Mo.

Missouri football landed its first commitment of the 2024 recruiting class on Saturday, and it came from in-state. Joplin tight end Whit Hafer announced his decision on social media.

“Thankful and blessed to announce my commitment to The University of Missouri,” Hafer said in a Tweet.

Hafer was rated as a three-star prospect at tight end by 247Sports. He chose the Tigers over offers from Kansas, Kansas State and UNLV.

He is listed in his Twitter bio as standing 6-foot-7 and weighing 235 pounds. 247Sports ranked him as the No. 32 tight end nationally in his class, and the No. 15 best prospects in the state of Missouri.

The 2024 class became Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz’s second in a row to have an in-state tight end as its first commitment. The class of 2023 started out with Brett Norfleet committing to the Tigers.

Residing in the Show Me State wasn’t Hafer’s only connection to the MU program. His father, Jeff Hafer, played four years of basketball for the Tigers from 1996-2000, when he bridged the head coaching tenures

China isn’t leader in land ownership in South Dakota, the USDA says

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — Gov. Kristi Noem is concerned, and at least several lawmakers are concerned, about foreign ownership of agricultural land.

The state already has a law that restricts foreign ownership of agricultural land by a person or government to 160 acres. But the proposal in 2023 appears to be more restrictive than state law 43-2A-2 passed in 1979.

The Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee voted 7-0 on Feb. 14 to send SB-185 forward to the full Senate. The bill calls for creating a board to review purchases or leases of agricultural land by foreign persons or entities, with the governor deciding whether to allow a transaction to proceed.

Noem is focused on Chinese-ownership of agricultural land.

“We also have a duty to protect South Dakota land from national security threats. Possibly the greatest external threat facing our nation today is the Chinese Communist Party. Unfortunately, foreign countries now hold approximately 40 million acres of ag land in the United States – and that number will only increase as evil governments like China step up their game,” Noem wrote in an opinion piece published on Feb. 2 on news.sd.gov.

Multiple media have reported about the Chinese Community

Queensland police union wants to buy Wieambilla property so it can’t be used to promote ‘warped views’ | Queensland

The remote bushland property where two police officers were murdered could be used as a retreat or training center if the Queensland government agreed to clear the way to its purchase.

Constables Matthew Arnold, 26 and Rachel McCrow, 29, died in a hail of gunfire after pulling up to the rural property at Wieambilla, three hours west of Brisbane, on 12 December.

Neighbor Alan Dare was also gunned down when conspiracy theorists Gareth Train, his partner, Stacey Train, and brother Nathaniel Train opened fire upon their approach.

The officers were checking the property, owned by Gareth and Stacey Train, while conducting a missing person check for Nathaniel Train.

The Queensland Police Union said on Tuesday it wanted to buy the block and had asked the government for help resuming the land.

“The QPU would never want to see this land fall into the hands of any other anti-vaxxer, pro-gun conspiracy theorist, sovereign citizens who may seek to utilize the reputation of this site to promote their own dangerous and warped views,” union head Ian Leavers told the Courier-Mail.

“That is why the QPU has an obligation to safeguard this property to protect the memories of the police who gave their

West Kootenay landowner seeks fair land-use compensation from power companies

A West Kootenay property owner is seeking fair compensation for landowners across the province.

Pend d’Oreille resident Jim Urquhart is putting out the call to BC landowners who have electrical transmission line right-of-ways on their private property, to come together and discuss what the government and civil society have determined constitutes fair, owed land-use compensation.

“It is time that utilities in BC paid the same land-use compensation that other energy producers in BC and Alberta that place above ground structures on private property consider fair,” said Urquhart. “If landowners in BC are ever to get fair, owed land-use compensation they will have to come together.”

Urquhart says that landowners are excluded from government funded advocacy offices available to other landowners in BC and Alberta facing similar circumstances.

“The problem is the framework that the BC utilities use to decide their compensation payment is based on a land value and there is no correlation between a land value and the total impact value for which landowners are owed.”

BC Hydro spokesperson, Mary-Ann Coules, confirmed that the majority of Statutory Right-of-Way (ROW) agreements are granted in perpetuity and are registered with the BC Land Title and Survey Authority.
