Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen landed in Beijing Thursday on a four-day trip aimed at finding common ground as rivalry between the US and China becomes increasingly adversarial.

Yellen’s trip marks a deepening thaw in ties between the US and China and comes weeks after Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Beijing in last month, which was the first high-level meeting between the two countries after months of tensions.

“The two sides are basically talking, trying to find the strategic space for both sides to operate, and this will be very good for the rest of the world,” Andrew Sheng, a distinguished fellow at the University of Hong Kong’s Asia Global Institute, told CNBC Thursday.

Yellen’s trip comes just days after China abruptly imposed export curbs on chipmaking metals and its compounds, escalating Beijing’s technological war with the US and Europe.

Before leaving for China, Yellen had a “frank and productive discussion” with Xie Feng, the Chinese US ambassador, according

Biden’s proposal would let conservationists lease public land much as drillers and ranchers do

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — The Biden administration wants to put conserving vast government-owned lands on equal footing with oil drilling, livestock grazing and other interests, according to a top administration official who defended the idea against criticism that it would interfere with industry.

The proposal would allow conservationists and others to lease federally owned land to restore it, much the same way oil companies buy leases to drill and ranchers pay to graze cattle. Companies could also buy conservation leases, such as oil drillers who want to offset damage to public lands by restoring acreage elsewhere.

Tracy Stone-Manning, director of the Bureau of Land Management, said in an interview with The Associated Press that the proposed changes would address rising pressure from climate change and development. While the bureau previously issued leases for conservation in limited cases, it has never had a dedicated program for it, he said.

Prince Harry has landed back in California just 16 hours after his father’s coronation.

The Duke of Sussex caught a British Airways flight shortly after King Charles’ service finished and arrived at Los Angeles International Airport at about 7.30pm local time (3.30am UK).

This was just 16-and-a-half hours after the coronation commenced at 11am on Saturday.

British Airways flight attendants confirmed to the PA news agency that Harry had been on the flight but said they were not permitted to discuss his trip.

The duke was reuniting with his son after Prince Archie turned four on Saturday, spending the day with his mother, the Duchess of Sussex, at their US home.

Harry’s appearance at the coronation marked his first public appearance alongside the royals since he lambasted his family in his controversial memoir Spare.

His book contained claims his father put his own interests above Harry’s and was jealous of his wife.

There was also the incendiary claim his brother, the Prince of Wales, physically attacked Harry during an argument about Meghan.

Residential lot to be created on Lakeshore Drive in Osoyoos

Madeline Baker, Times Chronicle Staff

Owners of a property on Lakeshore Drive in Osoyoos are hoping to have their 0.2 hectare property released from land reserves held by the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) to allow for subdivision and further development at the site.

The 0.2 hectare property at 3621 Lakeshore Drive is zoned as low-medium residential in the town’s Official Community Plan, has never been used for agricultural purposes, is bordered by single-family homes and one empty lot, and is serviced by the Town’s water and sewer systems, but still falls under the ALC’s reserve land.

According to the Town of Osoyoos’ growth management approach, which works in concert with the ALC to protect 288 hectares of mostly active agricultural land base, properties that have access to the town’s servicing infrastructure, like this one, are well suited to development rather than protection.

The property owner, who currently has their home on the property, plans to subdivide it into two smaller residential lots. This would, according to the Town of Osoyoos’ report to council, “open up potential for infill residential development within an already serviced area,” an important consideration given the housing shortage that plagues the town.

Normally it would be

Owing to the demand from councillors, the Greater Chennai Corporation plans to assess 20,000 buildings, developed on poromboke land, for property tax. It has sought a clarification from the government whether the assessment of such buildings can be carried out in various zones of the city.

At the Corporation Council meeting held on March 2, councillors demanded a property tax assessment of buildings on Poromboke land. Their argument was that many families that had been living for generations on certain categories of land, like grama nathamwere unable to get pattas.

ME Sekar, councillor of ward 89 in the Ambattur zone, said over 500 buildings in areas, like Kamarajar Nagar at Padi, had been built on poromboke land, and the residents were demanding pattas. “The residents have demanded that the Corporation assess the buildings for property tax,” he said.

The situation is more challenging in the added areas, which were merged with the city in 2011, Corporation officials say. “There are no specific guidelines for solving such issues,

TikTokers target the controversial Willow oil project

Trans-Alaska Pipeline (Alyeska pipeline) running through the landscape with Mountain range in the distance in Alaska.

The oil drilling development would be on federal land

US government officials are expected to make a decision on one of the biggest US oil projects in decades this week.

Environmental groups and some Native residents have long opposed the proposal because of its potential for climate impacts and wildlife damage.

But the opposition has grown rapidly in the last few weeks as the #stopwillow campaign has gone viral on TikTok.

ConocoPhillips, the company behind the project, said it would create thousands of jobs and revenue for locals.

The Willow oil project – if agreed – could produce up to 180,000 barrels of oil a day, making it the largest oil project in the region for decades. By comparison, Prudhoe Bay in Alaska, which is the largest oil field in North America, produces 281,800 barrels a day.

The US Bureau of Land Management estimated that the project, on Alaska’s remote North Slope, would produce up to 278 million metric tons of CO2e over its 30-year lifetime – the equivalent of adding more than 2 million cars to roads in the US.

CO2e is a unit used to express the climate impact of all greenhouse gases together as if they were

Detroit council OKs land transfer with owners of Ambassador Bridge

Amid intense public scrutiny, the Detroit City Council voted to approve a land transfer deal with the Detroit International Bridge Co., despite fears from residents that it would lead to the decision of the surrounding community.

The land in question, 3085 W. Jefferson Ave., is the final piece of a 2015 agreement with the bridge company that included funds for improvements and upgrades to Riverside Park, among other conditions. Residents of the neighborhood surrounding the embed ground, called Hubbard Richard, urged city leaders to hold off on finalizing the agreement until a Community Benefits plan has been established and to prioritize the livelihood of the neighborhood over corporate greed.

In 2015, the city entered a land exchange agreement with the bridge company that was predicated on a number of requirements from each party, including a transfer of approximately 4.8 acres of waterfront property west of Riverside Park from the company to the city and a $5 million donation from the bridge company for enhancements to the park, $3 million of which has been given. The remaining $2 million for the park is conditioned upon the transfer of the final parcel of approximately 3.8 acres of land on Jefferson Avenue, this

Colts Rumors: Proposed Trade Lands Colts QB Bryce Young in NFL Mock Draft

Chris Ballard

A proposed trade indirect general manager Chris Ballard and the Indianapolis Colts a former Heisman Trophy winner.

The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly closing in on who will become their next head coach. It wouldn’t be surprising if the team also found a long-term solution at quarterback this offseason.

NFL writer Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus argued the Colts will get that signal caller by exercising a draft trade. Renner projected Indianapolis to move up to the No. 1 pick to select Alabama signal caller Bryce Young.

“It’ll take a premium to move up for a prospect like Bryce Young (Pick Nos. 4 and 36 and a 2024 second-rounder is what I’d project), but it’s well worth it for the quarterback-starved Colts,” Renner wrote. “What Young did to an NFL defense in Georgia’s 2021 unit makes me worry a lot less about his size going forward.”

In Renner’s proposed trade, the Colts would keep their 2024 first-rounder. However, the Colts wouldn’t make another selection this year after No. 1 until the third round at No. 80 overalls.

The Minnesota Vikings are expected sooner than later to meet one of the hottest defensive coaches going into the NFL right now.

Minnesota hit the ground running on hiring a new defensive coordinator in the days after they dumped Ed Donatell, but then things came to a screeching halt. As it turned out, the team brass pumped the brakes for one reason only — a shot to land Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, among the rising young stars in the league’s coaching ranks.

Over the weekend, the Vikings took two big steps closer to landing their guy. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday, February 4, that the Broncos had cut Evero loose and that an interview with his old compatriots — general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell — was imminent.
