From the Archives: 1913 California law prohibits Asian immigrants from owning land

On May 19, 1913, California Gov. Hiram Johnson signed the Webb-Hartley Law prohibiting “aliens ineligible to citizenship” from owning farm land, a measure targeting Asian immigrants, particularly Japanese farmers who were perceived as a threat by some in the agricultural industry. Seven years later, the state barred anyone with Japanese ancestry from buying farmland.

The Alien Land Laws were invalidated in 1952 by the Supreme Court of California.

Beginner Michigan pilot Taylor Hash lands plane with missing wheel in emergency landing

A beginner pilot in Michigan safely landed a plane that was missing a crucial part Friday after another pilot coached her through the terrifying, caught-on-camera moment Friday.

On Taylor Hash’s third-ever solo flight, she lost the aircraft’s front nose gear tire as she cleared the runway and ascended into the air.

The missing piece was quickly noticed by another pilot who was preparing to take off, according to reports.

The veteran pilot alerted the control tower at Oakland County International Airport about the mishap, and then jumped into action to offer life-saving guidance to the freaked-out 21-year-old.

The more experienced pilot, Chris Yates, radioed Hash and quickly reassured her as he heard her voice tremble.

“Taylor, this is Chris. My daughter’s name is Taylor and I taught her to fly! We’re gonna be just fine, kiddo,” Yates said over the radio, according to WXYZ.

Six Nations land defenders permanently barred from site

It was a legal victory for developers looking to build on a Caledonia property occupied by Indigenous land defenders since July 2020.

On Tuesday, Superior Court Justice Paul Sweeny granted Foxgate Developments a permanent injunction barring unauthorized personnel from the 25-acre property on McKenzie Road, which was to be a 218-unit subdivision but became known internationally as 1492 Land Back Lane after being taken over by a group from Six Nations.

“Foxgate has legal title of the lands. Once the title is established, the owner has the right to prevent others from trespassing,” Sweeny said in a 26-page written decision.

“The conduct of the defendants, including the destruction of property and the continuing trespass, supports the need for a permanent injunction.”

Sweeny was unconvinced by legal arguments put forth by lawyers for 1492 Land Back Lane spokesperson Skyler Williams that the Crown failed in its duty to consult with Indigenous communities before granting Foxgate permission to build.

That duty to consult, Sweeny said, is owed to representative bodies, not individuals such as Williams and his fellow land defenders.

The judge noted Foxgate did consult with the Six Nations Elected Council — which agreed not to oppose the build in exchange

New Moffitt Cancer Center campus to bring more than just a hospital in Pasco

LAND O’ LAKES, Fla. — Linda Shotsberger’s fight started off in the new year when she saw something that didn’t look right.

“I had turned yellow that was my only sign. And then they started testing and they found out I had pancreatic cancer,” she said.

Linda said she was lucky the cancer was still in its early stage. After her diagnosis, she’s been getting treatment at Moffitt Cancer Center.

“They gave me great hope. Great hope,” Shotsberger said.

That hope is something Moffitt Cancer Center is bringing to an entirely new community with Speros. That’s the name of Moffitt’s new 775-acre campus coming to Pasco County.

“Speros means hope. And this is going to provide a lot of hope for patients with cancer and many other diseases through the years,” said Moffitt CEO Dr. Patrick Hwu.

Moffitt will build the Speros on land off Ridge Road in Land O’Lakes. It will eventually have 140 buildings that will include housing, hotel space, veterans’ facilities, and academic training space. The first phase will cost $1.6 billion and will be completed over the next five years.

“This area is one of the fastest growing areas in the whole country and it has

Bears get No. 1 overall pick in 2023 draft after Texans beat Colts

Bears land No. 1 overall pick in 2023 draft originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Bears technically lost their final game of the season when they fell to the Vikings 29-13, but in the long run, they won the day. Since the Bears lost and the Texans beat the Colts 32-31, the Bears now have the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s draft.

It’s unlikely the Bears use the No. 1 overall pick since they have their franchise quarterback in Justin Fields. Instead, Ryan Poles could trade that pick for a king’s ransom to a team that covets Bryce Young or CJ Stroud. It would be possible to do that and stay within the top-five, too.

Since the Texans no longer have the top choice, they could trade up one spot to ensure they get their guy at QB. The Colts will have a top-five pick and need a quarterback after the Matt Ryan experiment failed. The Seahawks could end up with a top-five pick if the Broncos fell to the Chargers on Sunday afternoon, and they could be in on a QB too, depending on how they feel about Geno Smith moving forward.

The last time a
