Plane emergency evacuation slide lands in Chicago neighborhood

An emergency evacuation slide from a plane that landed Monday at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago apparently fell off and was found in a nearby neighborhood, officials said.

No injuries were reported. Pictures from NBC Chicago showed officials removing what looked like a large section of plastic-like material. It landed in a backyard, the station reported.

Maintenance workers at the airport noticed the slide was missing from a United Airlines Boeing 767 that had just arrived from Switzerland, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

“We immediately contacted the FAA and are working with our team to better understand the circumstances around this matter,” the airline said in a statement.

The flight from Zurich landed safely with 155 passengers and 10 crew members aboard, the airline said.

The slide is in a compartment near the wing and exit door, and the door wouldn’t have to open for it to fall off, a source with knowledge of the situation said. The compartment door was open when it landed, the source said.

The FAA said it is investigating.

India’s historic Moon mission lifts off successfully

India has launched its third Moon mission, aiming to be the first to land near its little-explored south pole.

The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft with an orbiter, lander and a rover lifted off at 14:35 on Friday (09:05 GMT) from Sriharikota space centre.

The lander is due to reach the Moon on August 23-24.

If successful, India will be only the fourth country to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, following the US, the former Soviet Union and China.

Thousands of people watched the launch from the viewer’s gallery and commentators described the sight of the rocket “soaring in the sky” as “majestic”. The lift off was greeted with cheers and loud applause from the crowds and scientists.

“Chandrayaan-3 has started its journey towards the Moon,” Indian Space Research Organization (Isro) chief Sreedhara Panicker Somanath said.

The third in India’s program of lunar exploration, Chandrayaan-3 is expected to build on the success of its earlier Moon missions.

It comes 13 years after the country’s first Moon mission in 2008, which carried out “the first and most detailed search for water on the lunar surface and established the Moon has an atmosphere during daytime”, said Mylswamy Annadurai, project director of Chandrayaan-1 .

Land ownership questions draw a big crowd in Kings County

A grassroots land-protection group is calling on the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission to investigate the ownership of land in the Kings County area of Prince Edward Island.

More than 200 people attended a public forum in Montague on Saturday, organized by the Coalition for the Protection of PEI Lands.

“This is a big issue within Three Rivers,” said Shane MacDonald, one of the speakers at the meeting. “A lot of people have been waking up to the actual mass of purchases of large corporations in the Three Rivers area or even just Eastern PEI”

The meeting focused mainly on land owned by two Buddhist monasteries in Kings County, as well as land owned by corporations or individuals that coalition organizers believe to be affiliated with the Buddhist movement on PEI

The coalition has concerns over what it sees as a concentration of land ownership, and the impact of rising land prices on the local community.

“Multiple properties being sold and resold to non-residents is giving us massive inflation,” MacDonald told CBC News on Monday. “There’s evidence to see that a lot was sold a year ago for $20,000 and then sold for $100,000 a year after that. That’s a

A property owner in Westwold is losing land and structures after the Salmon River crested on May 6, and is now under a local emergency order with the TNRD.

Strett Mercer, whose primary home is in Burnaby, spent a few harrowing days at the property in Westwold over the weekend as river waters eroded his land, took out a farm bridge and threatened to topple his barn. He said two large trees fell down and were backing up the even more flow, directing more water to the bank edge.

“It was scary, I’ve never seen a river run like that,” he said. “I was with the neighbor, wondering if I should pull everything out of the barn to save it, trying to figure out what to do.”

Mercer hesitated to take action, concerned about provincial regulations around working around rivers and elements of whether the costs of trying to stop the erosion himself would be covered by insurance. He set up a security camera and returned to

Prince Harry has landed back in California just 16 hours after his father’s coronation.

The Duke of Sussex caught a British Airways flight shortly after King Charles’ service finished and arrived at Los Angeles International Airport at about 7.30pm local time (3.30am UK).

This was just 16-and-a-half hours after the coronation commenced at 11am on Saturday.

British Airways flight attendants confirmed to the PA news agency that Harry had been on the flight but said they were not permitted to discuss his trip.

The duke was reuniting with his son after Prince Archie turned four on Saturday, spending the day with his mother, the Duchess of Sussex, at their US home.

Harry’s appearance at the coronation marked his first public appearance alongside the royals since he lambasted his family in his controversial memoir Spare.

His book contained claims his father put his own interests above Harry’s and was jealous of his wife.

There was also the incendiary claim his brother, the Prince of Wales, physically attacked Harry during an argument about Meghan.

Transition to EVs shakes up the familiar Jaguar, Land Rover luxury brands

Say goodbye to the Land Rover brand, and get ready for a smaller, much more expensive model line from Jaguar.

Jaguar will introduce an electric GT priced above $125,000, while the Land Rover name will retreat in favor of three new brands.

Those are the top-line takeaways from Jaguar Land Rover’s new strategy, as first reported by Automotive News.

The storied Land Rover brand name will reportedly be relegated to a “trust mark” badge on tailgates — perhaps elsewhere; the announcement is short on details. The Jaguar brand — so esteemed that Ford paid $2.5 billion for it in 1989 — will finally abandon efforts to become a full-line luxury brand, shifting upmarket to build fewer — one hopes more profitable — vehicles that compete with the top of Mercedes’ and BMW’s lines. Prices will start north of $125,000 and likely elevate into Rolls-Royce/Bentley territory.

Land Rover, on the other hand, will grow into three separate brands: Range Rover, Discovery and Defender.

My first thoughts? It’s fair to view highly publicized “rebranding” campaigns skeptically.

A billion here, a billion there

Ford paid $2.75 billion for Land Rover in 2000, for those of you scoring at home. Neither Jaguar nor Land Rover acquisitions paid off. Ford sold Jaguar and Land Rover to current owner Tata Motors of India for $2.23 billion in 2008.

North Korea missile launch sparks confusion in Japan

A missile launch by North Korea sparked confusion in northern Japan, where an evacuation order was abruptly retracted

A missile launch by North Korea sparked confusion in northern Japan, where an evacuation order was issued and then retracted within 30 minutes.

Sirens blared across Hokkaido and residents were told to “evacuate immediately” on Thursday morning.

Authorities later said the missile did not land near the island and withdrew the alert.

Tensions have been growing in the region, as North Korea has already fired 27 missiles this year.

The projectile flew about 1,000 km (620 miles), in what South Korea’s military called a “grave provocation”.

The missile is believed to be of medium or longer-range, but details on which weapon was tested on Thursday morning have not yet been made public.

Meanwhile, Japanese coastguards said the missile had splashed into waters to the east of North Korea. Mr Hamada said he could not confirm whether the missile flew over Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

Schools in Hokkaido delayed their start times and some train services were suspended, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported.

Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said Pyongyang’s repeated missile launches pose a “grave and imminent threat” to Japan’s security.

Lakewood Ranch builder plans ‘race village’ near DeSoto Speedway as county OK’s new homes

Thousands of homes are set to be built near the historic DeSoto Speedway in East Manatee County following approval from the Manatee County Commission last week.

It’s the first time the commissioners have approved a new development past the latest location of the county’s development boundary line, which protects agricultural land to the east.

A previous public meeting attracted dozens of speakers worried about the racetrack’s future when new homes surrounded it.

But plans for Taylor Ranch now include a “race village” on 140 acres closest to the speedway, developers announced during Thursday’s public Land Use meeting.

The idea was inspired by The Motor Enclave in Tampa, a 200-acre site which offers luxury garage space near a private paved track and off-road trails, as well as an events center.

“This area of the property will be constructed, designed and marketed to future owners and tenants who want to take advantage of being in close proximity to the racetrack — people who understand the options and want to be part of that lifestyle,” said Kyle Grimes, a land use attorney representing the developer.

Opponents of Taylor Ranch feared that new residents would complain about noise from the racetrack, which serves as

East Manatee neighbors oppose plans for 10,000 new homes

Two large-scale development projects working their way through the Manatee County permitting process could bring nearly 10,000 new homes to land that has traditionally been used for agricultural purposes.

[–

Neighbors are saying the projects, Taylor Ranch and East River Ranch, are too large, and too much for the rural roads to handle.

[–

On Thursday, the Manatee County Commission is set to consider approvals for Taylor Ranch with 4,500 housing units.

[–

Taylor Ranch would be the first project approved beyond the Future Development Area Boundary (FDAB) line, which the county uses to limit urban sprawl and protect agricultural land.

[–

Among those affected by the proposed Taylor Ranch are the owners of the Freedom Factory racetrack. The nearest home in Taylor Ranch, according to planners, would be built about 400 feet from the racetrack.

[–

Nearly 700 homes would be in the area closest to the racetrack, according to the site plan shared by Schroeder-Manatee Ranch.

Colts Rumors: Proposed Trade Lands Colts QB Bryce Young in NFL Mock Draft

A proposed trade indirect general manager Chris Ballard and the Indianapolis Colts a former Heisman Trophy winner.

The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly closing in on who will become their next head coach. It wouldn’t be surprising if the team also found a long-term solution at quarterback this offseason.

NFL writer Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus argued the Colts will get that signal caller by exercising a draft trade. Renner projected Indianapolis to move up to the No. 1 pick to select Alabama signal caller Bryce Young.

“It’ll take a premium to move up for a prospect like Bryce Young (Pick Nos. 4 and 36 and a 2024 second-rounder is what I’d project), but it’s well worth it for the quarterback-starved Colts,” Renner wrote. “What Young did to an NFL defense in Georgia’s 2021 unit makes me worry a lot less about his size going forward.”

In Renner’s proposed trade, the Colts would keep their 2024 first-rounder. However, the Colts wouldn’t make another selection this year after No. 1 until the third round at No. 80 overalls.

The 2023 draft class is much deeper at quarterback than last year. But
